Jane Eyre (originally published as Jane Eyre An Autobiography) is a novel by English writer Charlotte Brontë. It was published on 16 October 1847 by Smith, Elder & Co. of London, England, under the pen name "Currer Bell." The first American edition was released the following year by Harper & Brothers of New York. Primarily of the bildungsroman genre, Jane Eyre follows the emotions and experiences of its title character, including her growth to adulthood, and her love for Mr. Rochester, the byronic master of fictitious Thornfield Hall. In its internalisation of the action — the focus is on the gradual unfolding of Jane's moral and spiritual sensibility and all the events are coloured by a heightened intensity that was previously the domain of poetry — Jane Eyre revolutionised the art of fiction. Charlotte Brontë has been called the 'first historian of the private consciousness' and the literary ancestor of writers like Joyce and Proust. The novel contains elements of social criticism, with a strong sense of morality at its core, but is nonetheless a novel many consider ahead of its time given the individualistic character of Jane and the novel's exploration of classism, sexuality, religion, and proto-feminism.

"When I started reading this book, I found it supremely boring (no don’t kill me yet, hold your horses), and it was a struggle to keep at it. In fact, I would have certainly DNFed it, if not for the fact that I was buddy-reading this book with Bookish Muggle, and I really did not want to let her down.

It’s the only reason I bothered to drag myself through the initial few chapters. And no, I am not saying it was all dreary, there were certainly sparks of excellence, but for the most part I was bored out of my mind.

So from that kind of a beginning to now, when I’ve finished the book, and I’m obsessed with it – it’s clearly been quite a turnaround, and now I can’t imagine giving this anything less than 5 glorious stars.

Sure, most of this has to do with a terrific second half, but in hindsight, I can see how the first half was as vital as the second to this wonderful wonderful story. Without the backstory, the second half wouldn’t have had the kind of impact it did.

This one truly is a masterpiece, but I’m getting ahead of myself, so let’s back up a bit here.

I know many people view this as an epic romance, a timeless love-story, and while it’s definitely one way of looking at it, I view this more as a ‘life story’. The tale of the evolution of a strong and independent female protagonist, a 19th century feminist, who was light years ahead of her time.

I do not think, sir, you have any right to command me, merely because you are older than I, or because you have seen more of the world than I have; your claim to superiority depends on the use you have made of your time and experience.

The author utilizes the first person narrative, which creates a high degree of intimacy with the character; it made me feel like I knew Jane as well as she comes to know her own self. And the more I knew her, the more I liked her.

I am not saying I agreed with everything that she thought or did. For instance, she sure had a strong moral compass, which is great, but was a little too preachy at times. And no, I am not judging her for that, just saying. At any rate, none of us can claim perfection, so I can hardly expect that from her.

Having said that, I do envy her strength of character in the face of tragedy and temptation.

Laws and principles are not for the times when there is no temptation: they are for such moments as this, when body and soul rise in mutiny against their rigour; stringent are they; inviolate they shall be. If at my individual convenience I might break them, what would be their worth?

She did not to let love justify all the mistakes and wrong choices, and refused to let it blind her to everything else that was important for her sense of self-worth. And I LOVED her for this unwavering determination to stay true to herself!

I wish I could have declared with any degree of confidence that I would have acted in a similar manner too, but in all honesty, I cannot say that. Which is why I found her to be a very brave soul, to deny the first glimpse of happiness that she found in her life, which had so far essentially been one long tale of woe.

• I am not going to review the book, it's Jane Eyre, if you need to find a review there are plenty since 1847.
  
  This is about the kindle format. It's just bad. Some may even say horrible, but I live on the student budget so I am a bit on the beggers can't be choosers side. I didn't find it the worst format but the biggest annoyance I had was repeated sentences and even pages at times. Then my small nitpick that the following chapter just rests under the line of its predecessor. Why is that a thing? Are you trying to save the trees, its digital why not start the next chapter on the following page, it just looks cleaner.
  
  But wise word works and it can identify each chapter in the books, so in that regard, I didn't find it the worst format just in need of edits for the repeats. Also, heads up, keep iphone handy if you don't know french.
• I have loved this novel from the first time I read it in middle school. I reread it every few years to see if it holds up and it does. I listen eagerly as Jane tells her story beginning as a ten-year-old orphan emotionally and physically abused by her Aunt Reed and cousins. She continues the tale of her schooling and placement as a governess to the ward of Edward Rochester, fierce master of Thornfield Hall. His secret unfolds turning Jane's live upside down. Charlotte Bronte is consistent in developing her characters and her plot. This novel remains one of my all-time favorites. This particular e-book repeats phrases without reason, taking away the joy of reading at times, but since I didn't have one of my hard copies (yes, I own at least six editions), this version satisfied my need to read.
• My favorite love story of all time!!! A young Jane Eyre is sent to live with her cruel aunt at Gateshead. She is then at the young age of ten forced to a school filled with harsh conditions and neglect. Jump eight years and you have a young woman ready to get out in the world . She then becomes a governess to the ward of Mr.Rochester Adele. Mr.Rochester is a brooding,mysterious type of fellow . Who's strange mood changes are caused by some type of mystery at thorn field where she is now staying. Not long after their first meeting Jane softens the heart of her employer whom she has fallen in love with. But Mr.Rochester holds a terrible secret ,that explains all the strange things happening at Thornfield. A secret that she is purposely excluded from,a secret that can drive the two lovers apart forever ......
