Windows Server 2012 Inside Out William Stanek 9780735666313 Books Reviews
- I gave this book five stars because it is very well detailed and laid out for easy reference. I also appreciate the Author's writing style and the extra lengths he went to by explaining why some things work the way they do. I've been in the IT industry 20 years and last worked heavily on Windows NT and during the last 2 years, Windows 2008 R2. This book for Server 2012 (R2) gives me the comfort blanket I sometimes need when I self-teach and grow with new server releases. The only observation I would make is the subject flow it's sequential to the extent that W. Stanek has thought about what comes first when deploying new servers and he has made a great deal out of analysis and planning prior to deployment. On the other hand, I get stuck with some things and excel at others, so for me I "dip into" the book when I hit a crunch. Btw this book is really thick - it would be helpful if it was available in e-reader form as part of the Paperback purchase. Great companion to have, ideal for Architects, Technical Leads, and Enterprise and Local Administrators.
- Really wordy but it somehow manages not to actually say useful things. No section on Remote Desktop Gateway? For a book called Inside Out, I find myself just heading to google too often to find things this book leaves out.
- I don't know what I would have done without this book here recently. I added a couple of SAS drives to our storage RAID 10 array partition on the Domain Server and had the choice or whether to use the new file system or sticking with NTFS. Well I didn't know what the deal was with the new file system was until I looked it up in this gigantic book but thank God I did! I stuck with NTFS due to compatibility reasons with other older servers we have. I'm glad I had this book for that situation along with a few other when migrating services from a 2003 Domain to the new 2012 version. Way different and which is why a reference like this is needed on hand at all times in an IT environment.
- I am an IT professional who likes to have a book to read and refer to. In an age of digital copies it is sometimes nice to have a book to highlight and mark pages. This is a good sized book for portability. The topics are covered well and offers step by step instruction as well as detailed descriptions of what you are doing.
The "missing" Windows Server 2012 manual. - Wow! I don't really like reading, and certainly not tech books, but this one blew me away. Stanek is a VERY clear thinker and writer. It felt like exactly the knowledge I need just pours into my brain, almost effortlessly. I've ready about 5 chapters so far, and highly recommend this book, probably the author in general...
- As other have said; huge book, tons of good stuff in here. If you are a beginner or your coming from pre Server 2008 R2; this book will walk you thru all the new features and details for setting up Server 2012 and using it to control all the computers on your network. From booting choices to setting up DHCP, DNS to Active Directory and Group Policy. All of which are dealt with in great detail - including best practices and examples.
On the bad side; if you are an Advanced user who is up to date on Server 2008 R2; a lot of this book is probably fluff to you. You already probably have a good idea of things like DNS on Server 2008 R2, so you won't need the dozens of pages just explaining what DNS is and how it works in this book. Another thing, a lot of more advanced topics are hardly covered Hyper-V, Remote Desktop Services, PowerShell 3.0 just get a basic what they are and how to install in this book.
In the end, for someone like me where it's been several years since I have gone into the details of the Server Operating System - this has been a nice refresher course. For those who are new or are coming from pre Server 2008 R2, I think you will find a lot to learn from in this book. For the up to date advanced user; I would say skip this book and look for others resources to get you up to date with Server 2012 without reading 10 pounds of paper. - This book is very well written, and easy to follow. The book provides the reader detailed instruction how to setup, configure, navigate and administer server 2012. It also has suggestions how to administer server 2012 for best performance in different computing environments. Now that I finished reading it (and gained allot of knowledge from it), I find myself using this book as a reference book.
- Well written guide. However this is a real world, real user book meant for the professional Systems Administrator. If you are looking for a book to pass the certification for Microsoft, get one specifically designed for that task. This certainly will help you learn 2012 though. Good reference source as well.
