Hamlet Traduction de FrançoisVictor Hugo French Edition eBook Shakespeare Reviews

  • Well, Hugo, like other French dramatists of the 19th and 20th centuries, undoubtedly suffered from Shakespeare envy. But what a strange experience to read a Hugonic version of Hamlet that is not in alexandrines, but in French *prose*–and the most unadorned prose possible. Hugo seems concerned here, not to approximate the poetical effect of Sh's lines, but to express as clearly as possible the straight meaning behind them. The result is strangely flat. It's as if Hugo wanted to present the mere ideas and the mere plotting, without any of the delight and the rhapsody and high-flying imagery of the English lines; and also without putting in their place metrical and metaphorical adornments of a French type. In order to show, perhaps, that the story made sense simply as a story? Or… perhaps… was he planning to turn this prose version into verse at a later date? The practice is not unknown amongst French dramatists.
