What would you do to help save the man that you loved?
Fitzwilliam Darcy is a shadow of his former self. Slowly retreating away from the people and the world around him. After a string of bad luck, he now hides himself within the walls of Pemberley like a recluse with no end in sight.
When Elizabeth Bennet hears about Mr Darcy's hermit-like existence, she vows to travel up to Pemberley and help in any way she can. But instead of helping him to break free from his self-made retreat, she finds herself happily joining him there.
She set out to tear open the shutters, but can she open the shutters around Mr Darcy's heart? Or has his heart been locked away too long for Miss Bennet's love to penetrate the shadows of his loneliness?
The Snowy Road to Pemberley is a contemporary set Pride and Prejudice Variation novella.

"... but if you dislike any prolonged angst - this is a very good modern take for you. The characterizations are simple but well drawn. - Unlike many JAFF fans, I can't pass up a good modern variation. I like them at least as much as those set in the regency because you can do so much with them outside of the normal parameters. Here, five years after a stormy not-quite-relationship with Elizabeth, Darcy is adrift in a sea of depression and failure. Unlike the Darcy of old, this one is facing financial crisis and the loss of Pemberley, which has injured his confidence to the point that he's shut himself away from the world to await the inevitable. Elizabeth has fared better, but is in a rut and similarly adrift, though hers is a sea of discontentment rather than melancholy. When she hears of Darcy's self-imposed exile from Georgiana, she sees a way to save them both.
I liked the juxtaposition of Darcy and Elizabeth's respective situations. Lizzy isn't wealthy, but she's more in control of her life and finances than Darcy is at the beginning. It's also her penchant for organization that ultimately saves Pemberley from it's almost certain doom. Rarely is our hero portrayed as anything but wealthy, successful and in control and it was interesting to see the opposite here. What is Darcy without Pemberley? More than he gives himself credit for. As for Lizzy, who begins the story looking for a purpose in life, she creates a fulfilling project that saves them both. It was well executed.
I deducted a star for a couple of reasons, but nothing dire. I felt that the story was a bit short, that it could have been fleshed out in parts, but the pacing wasn't bad. Still, the exchange of " I love yous" was a bit abrupt, even if the setting amongst frozen, tinkling willow trees was beautiful. I also thought the Reynoldses were a bit much; very sweet and charming, but I rather wanted them to go away so that ODC could be alone, lolz. And commas (so misunderstood, poor commas) were often missing. Grammar was otherwise fine.
Overall, it's biggest sin was that it could have been expanded into a longer story. It was so short I rather wondered why there were chapters at all, lolz. Still recommend and will try other works by this author. - ... but if you dislike any prolonged angst - this is a very good modern take for you. The characterizations are simple but well drawn.
