• The title of Joshua Kruger’s book, The Millionaire Prisoner, is part literal, part metaphorical. It is, indeed, a book written for jail and penitentiary inmates. The word “Millionaire,” however, does not refer to monetary wealth. Rather, it means prosperity. “True prosperity,” Kruger writes, “is about whole health and wealth. It’s about flourishing, thriving, and succeeding against the odds in all areas of your life.” In short, Kruger is writing to explain to inmates (or at least those who want to read the book) that they can achieve great goals while also learning to respect themselves and others.
  Kruger is not an armchair psychologist or advocate of the prosperity gospel. He is a convict himself and, he admits, will probably remain so for the remainder of his life. In fact, the accounts of his own successes (and failures) in life are part of his story. But he also draws on the exploits of fellow inmates and important historical figures (such as Julius Caesar) to explain the character traits that, to his thinking, will help shape the “millionaire prisoner.” The book contains much practical advice—such as how to obtain pen pals, how to focus one’s thinking, and how to write letters that will open valuable opportunities.
  Kruger is writing specifically to the millions of inmates currently in physical prisons. But many of his stories and much of his advice are still useful for those whose prisons are less tangible—prisons of negative or narrow thinking, of cynicism, of destructive habits. Kruger would probably agree that some of these could also become “millionaire prisoners.”
