THE THIRD LARGEST DESERT PARK in the country, Mojave National Preserve protects 1.6 million acres of spectacular arid lands at the heart of the Mojave Desert. Part of the celebrated Great Basin province, it is a spellbinding region of mighty mountain ranges rising thousands of feet above vast inland basins. Famous for the majestic Kelso Dunes, the Devils Playground, and the world's largest Joshua tree forest, the preserve also holds considerable natural and cultural wealth, including a wild range of landscapes, striking plant communities, and a rich mining past. Above all, it is a land of contrasts, alternatively forlorn and vibrant with life, stark and colorful, blanketed in snow in the winter, awash with wildflowers in the spring, and scorching hot in the summer. Being high-desert country and generally a little cooler than Death Valley, topographically less rugged, and far less visited, it offers a tremendous potential for comparatively easier hiking in complete solitude.

Hiking the Mojave Desert The Natural and Cultural Heritage of Mojave National Preserve Michel Digonnet 9780965917827 Books Reviews
- In my humble opinion Mr. Digonnet has written the best hiking & exploring books that I have ever read, and I have accumulated quite a few over the years prior to my hiking/backpacking trips to all of the best desert southwest locations as well as the high sierras, coastal redwoods, and Colorado Rockies. I especially like his descriptions of hikes where a desert rat like me will find the most solitude, something that is becoming more difficult to find these days as some of the most beautiful places have become over crowded within the last 30 years. He goes into great detail about the history, geology, flora, fauna, and other points of interest in each area within the book. The custom maps of each trail & area are amazing and you will find yourself dying to get out on these trails! If you are considering going to one of the areas in which he has written a guide book to, do yourself a huge favor and get any of his books. All others will pale in comparison. Considering his very interesting and diverse background, I have no idea how he has found the time to personally explore every nook and cranny of these immense parks, he must be a trail savage! Let alone the time he has taken to write and put together such incredible hiking guides. I can only hope that one day I will literally cross paths with him out on one of these trails and give him the hearty thanks he so richly deserves.
- If you're not already familiar with the Mojave National Preserve, I wouldn't start with this book. It goes into depth, but isn't laid out in a way designed to give a quick overview. Having said that, I'm pleased (although I've only spent a week or so going through it). I was able to get more information on areas I was already interested in, and found a couple of new areas I want to explore. It's also just fun to read about the history and geology of the place.
- Purchased this several weeks before a week long trip to MNP which we just returned from. The book was very useful in helping us plan before we went and then again while there visiting. Unfortunately it's rather dog-eared now after pulling it in and out of my day pack innumerable times.
The book particularly focuses on mines and rich mining history of the Preserve with VERY detailed geological information, which is fascinating, though sometimes a bit much. Excellent detailed maps are included. The only area which I felt it lacked in was information about finding petroglyph/pictograph sites in the Preserve. - I've read the author"s other two books on the Death Valley area. I loved the detailed and accurate descriptions of sites, mileage, history, etc. I used the books on my last Death Valley trip. I bought this book for the same reasons. Although I haven't been to the Mojave Preserve in over 10 years, I liked revisiting the area, through his book and someday hope to return to see more sites I missed on my last visit. I've read two other guides on the Mojave Preserve; they were good, but Digonnet's book is much better.
- This is the second book I have read by Digonnet and it did not disappoint. If you enjoyed his books on Death Valley, you know exactly what to expect. The Preserve and DVNP are so large and the roads sometimes so primitive that most travelers will only have time to explore several hiking areas in one visit. The author does a good job in giving detailed descriptions of roads and trails to make that task easier. I will be purchasing the author's next book "Joshua Tree" as soon as it is available.
- Digonet makes great hiking books for adventurous people. He talks about geology, history and about the hikes. Mind you some canyon hikes could require climbing skills and could be a bit sketchy. That's where the adventure starts... ) This is no ordinary hiking book that only talks about well marked trails with tons of people. This is more the "127 hours" kind of hiking.
- A well written book. Subjects are geology, history, plant life and wildlife. Each subject is tackelel head on with in depth research. There are also pages of topo maps, mileage charts...this book has it all. This one is well worth your purchase.
- Excellent book! I've been to the Mojave National Preserve several times and the NPS only acknowledges a handful of hikes so this book is great! It's thorough with excellent directions!
The only improvement I would make is that I'd have colored photos. I rarely buy a book with no colored photos. Colored photos inspire me! However, I am glad that I made an exception for this book. It did lose a star for having black and white photos. I know it costs more to print but I think everyone appreciates the added effects!
